After nearly five years of loyal service, Mininova disabled access to over a million torrent files when it partly shut down its website. Starting today, only approved publishers are able to upload files to the site, but luckily there are plenty of alternatives and potential replacements BitTorrent users can flock to.
With an impressive 175,820,430 visits and close to a billion page views in the last 30 days, Mininova set a record that they will be unable to break in the near future. Last August a Dutch court ruled that Mininova had to remove all links to ‘infringing’ torrent files, with disastrous consequences.
Since it is technically unfeasible to pre-approve or filter every potentially infringing torrent file, the Mininova team decided to throw in the towel and only allow torrents to be submitted by approved uploaders. This move resulted in the deletion of more than a million torrents, many of which were not infringing any copyrights at all.
Thankfully, there are still plenty of alternatives for those BitTorrent users who are looking for the latest Ubuntu, OpenSUSE or Fedora release.
Below we provide a random list of public torrent sites that are still open, but there are of course hundreds more sites we could have included. If your personal favorite is missing, feel free to post it in the comments below – preferably with your reasons why it should be included in any upcoming lists.

Update: The owner of another torrent site, Monova, told TorrentFreak that he has reserved all Mininova usernames for people who want to make the switch to his site. The account names can be claimed here. Also, we replaced some sites in the original top 10 because they went down or started to serve trojans.
I have been looking for many months to see how my sons Kindergarten class has been preparing him to use the internet let alone a computer. I have been trying to work with him at home, and I found that most of what he is learning at school is just grammar through computers. I find this to be a good start, but I was wondering how far the district will take the online learning to the next level. I remember how I learning through the University of Phoenix online, and I have to say that was one of the best online experiences I ever seen. I was trying to find something similar for my 5 year old, and I have to say that I found one of the best software yet, Blackboard.
“Putting learners at the center – so you can attract them, help them achieve and keep them – is as important as ever.
It’s also harder than ever. Why? You name it. Diverse learners. Economic uncertainty. Increased competition and accountability demands. And while there’s plenty of trial and experimentation, the results are often unclear.
Blackboard Learn™ can help by providing a foundation for engaging and assessing your learners inside and beyond a classroom.” (Excerpt from Blackboard.com)
This is the fundamental statement in today’s learning environment. Teachers need to be able to engage the students in such a way, that they will continuously want to learn. The video I put out a while back about the way students learn today, is so true, and Blackboard is finding the way to our children. I can only imagine that if we are able to take this technology to the point where we can all learn from many teachers around the world, the amount of knowledge gained can change the world.
With China progressing at an astronomical rate, and more people in China than in the USA, How do we compete? We need to give our children every advantage to progress their thinking. We can’t justify the old way of learning nor teaching. Technology is whats going to help fuel our children’s future, as long as the education system changes its thinking. We, as parents, also need to change our thinking, and help our children learn more about technology. If we start at home the schools will have no choice but advance their curriculum.
What is your take on the education system of today? Is it teaching our kids to be thinkers and innovators? Is it leaving our children behind the rest of the world? Let me know your thoughts.
I know we had many of these cell phones in our house. Whats crazy, is how many of these cell phones I remember. How many of them do you remember? Which ones where your favorite? Which ones did you not like?
I have to say that up till 2003, I think Nokia had the best phones in the market place. Their phones were great on many networks. I never had a complaint about them. When Samsung and other brands came out with their own versions, and we could start to get email and everything else on the phones, that is where I think Nokia lost its edge. Now with the iPhone, I think Apple has the market very well in hand. Who agrees with me?
After several months of testing out new application, I found several that are great for children. My own kids love to play these games to the point that every time we are sitting down somewhere for a meal they would like to play these games. These games are educational. It is amazing how far games have come on the iPhone in the last six months alone. The games that my kids enjoy are listed below with an explanation of the games.
1. Memory Pro – This app is based on the old fun game of memory. I remember playing this game with cards on the carpet. Now they have this game on the iPhone with no need to keep card in a box and make sure you still have them all. The game plays on the child’s memory and helps them enhance their memory. I have played the game with my 3 year old and he has progressed from the beginners level to the advanced. Its a fun game for the kids, and is educational.
2. Bug Squash – The game is made to concentrate the childs hand eye coordination. The premise of the game is squash every bug that crawls across the screen. It gives the kids the ability to have fun since the backgrounds look like food they may have eaten.
3. Whiteboard – Whiteboard is a great way to let your child have fun drawing a picture on the screen. It can even be saved and shared over the internet. Its a great way to let them be creative when a pen a paper are not available.
4. Quizzing – This is a simple quiz game for kids. It allows them to answer simple questions like colors, numbers, and letters. It works very well with 3 year olds who are just learning their letters and numbers.
There are more apps being created each day. I will be posting more as we test more.
For those of you that have loved playing the card game Phase 10, get ready. They now have an application for you to play Phase 10 on your iPhone. This application is great. Very easy to use, and you can adjust the speed if you are interested in a fast paced game.
I have been using the application for the last two months, and the game is a great way to use up time if you are waiting for anything. I have not come across any glitches, and the game seams to be learning how I play. For some reason I have started to actually lose against the computer. It might be learning how I play.
The object of the game is to complete each of the ten specific phases. If you complete the phase, you advance to the next phase, but if you do not, you must try again.
This mobile version includes stunning graphics and special effects, an innovative gameplay style and special game modes for you to discover. Play alone or with up to three players and collect special awards in the game as you progress.
Remember if you need to find something to do, like while you are sitting on a plane, check out Phase 10 for the iPhone today.
Most people would think that using the iPod on the iPhone is the only way to hear music. One day I was about to go walk my dog, and I noticed a glitch on my phone. All of my music in my iPod was gone. I didn’t know what to make of it. I thought to go back and spend all my time fixing the phone. So I looked for an application and I found the Pandora Internet Radio App.
The application is very cool. It allows you to choose the music that you like to listen to and through the internet it will play those songs to create a playlist of your music. The connection on my phone was not bad at all. There was no choppy signal, or deterioration of the music. It was crystal clear. I also found the Pandora App to be very useful when I was on a trip to New York, and the same thing happened. They had Go-go on the flight, and I just turned on my iPhone and started listening to my playlists. It was a great way to get my music and keep going without having a head ache of trying to reset my phone.
I know eventually I will need to reset my phone, but for the time being the Pandora app is a great application to hear music.

Israeli forces have targeted the office of Press TV and the Iranian Arab-language satellite channel al-Alam in the Gaza Strip.
There were two people wounded in the Israeli attack, a Press TV correspondent said Friday, adding that Press TV’s sister channel, Al-Alam, which was also based in the building has been affected by the attack.
According to our correspondent Hamoudi Gharib, the building was targeted even though the staff had kept light projectors working on the roof of the building 24 hours a day to mark the building.
The journalists working in the building had been given safety assurances that the building would not be targeted by mistake, after its coordinates were handed to organizations responsible for the journalist safety, including the UN.
The Press TV team said they received no warnings ahead of the Israeli strike, which only targeted journalists and news crew who were in the building.
The team’s equipment, including satellite transmission devices installed on the roof, have been damaged.
Press TV has been one of the few news networks which has provided extensive coverage of the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, which has claimed the lives of some 783 Palestinians.
